It really bothers me when, in a romance, the male protagonist will physically coerce the heroine into doing something. Such as when he feels she being stubborn and he simply picks her up and takes her where he wants her to go, or when he “kisses her into submission”. Just because a women “surrenders” to an unwanted kiss, does not make it ok. It’s still assault and it’s still reprehensible. This happens a lot more than one would think, especially in stories about enemies that fall in love, or when the lovers fight. It may not be overt – such as in Fifty Shades when Christian throws Ana over his shoulder in the middle of the street – but rather subtle and subversive, as it makes women believe that it’s “romantic” when a man they’re sexually attracted to takes control – with or without the woman’s consent.
